Phase I of the COMPAL Programme (COMPAL I), aimed at strengthening capacities and institutions in the areas of competition and consumer protection policies in Latin American countries.
Phase II of the COMPAL Programme (COMPAL II), aims at ensuring the sustainability of competition and consumer protection systems in the beneficiary countries, and improving the functioning of their markets.
Following the success of COMPAL I (2004 up to 2008), COMPAL II builds on the achievements and experiences gained. It focuses on deepening capacity and institutional building components, as well as maximizing the impact of project activities.
In light of the regional context in Latin America, this Programme also addresses a number of initiatives aimed at fostering the exchange of experiences and expertise, and promoting cooperation at the regional level.

Africa COMPAL project
The success of COMPAL I, led African countries to request UNCTAD to establish a similar project. Consequently, UNCTAD set up a pilot project for five African countries.
The Africa COMPAL project will be launched in Geneva, on 27 April, 2009.
The project aims at providing technical assistance to competition authorities in African countries.
