Industrial and Geographical Breakdown

Industrial and geographical breakdown are provided for FDI and operations data. The industrial breakdown used in the tables follows closely the third revision of the United Nations International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) (New York, United Nations, ST/ESA/STAT/SER.M/4/Rev.3, 1989). National data are not always reported in accordance with that code, however, and, in some cases, adjustments have been made to follow the ISIC. In the interest of space, the names of certain ISIC industries have been shortened.

Following is a list of all the industries (in the broad structure) referred to and their respective ISIC codes.

For the geographical and regional breakdowns, the classification of countries and economies as either developing, developed or Central and Eastern Europe is employed only as a matter of statistical and analytical convenience, and follows the breakdown outlined below, which follows closely United Nations practice. Those countries or economies reported by national sources under the heading "other countries", and which are not elsewhere classified, have been placed under the unallocated category. The unallocated component reported in the geographical breakdown may reflect investments by international organizations (for example, the International Finance Corporation) or other countries not available separately.

The classification of developed and developing areas and economies is as follows:

  • Developed areas:
    • Western Europe
    • North America
    • Other developed (Australia, Israel, Japan, Malta, New Zealand)
  • Developing areas and territories:
    • Africa
    • East, South and South-East Asia (excluding Japan)
    • West Asia (excluding Israel)
    • Central Asia
    • Latin America and the Caribbean
    • The Pacific (excluding Australia and New Zealand)
  • Central and Eastern Europe
