As a member of the United Nations Secretary-Generalīs High-level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis, UNCTAD has contributed to the Comprehensive Framework of Action adopted by the task force in June 2008 and to its follow-up meeting in January.

UNCTAD intends to contribute to implementing that framework by:

  • Stepping up efforts to help developing countries integrate commodities into their agricultural development strategies and policies. This includes more work on diversification, price stabilization, risk management, and speculation prevention;

  • Continuing to work with developing countries on their agricultural negotiations under the Doha Round of trade talks;

  • Looking increasingly at the potentials of biotechnology for balancing food and energy needs;

  • Organizing a series of high-level, action-oriented forums on the development issues surrounding cotton, cocoa and coffee;

  • Helping countries to attract private investment in agricultural food production that guarantees the benefits are shared by investors and host countries alike;

  • Collaborating with the rest of the international community on how to deal with trade-distorting subsidies and export restrictions and allocating more official development assistance to agricultural development;

  • Intensifying our work on gender and trade, identifying ways of supporting womenīs role in production, agriculture, adaptation to climate change, education and extension services;

  • Conducting peer review workshops for sharing experiences and best practices on agricultural policies;

  • Continuing our work on organic agriculture as a sustainable alternative for raising the productivity of African smallholders.
