Parallel Event

High-level Parliamentary Round Table

"Parliamentary Support for the Fight Against Poverty"

Parliamentarians from around the world, and in particular from LDCs, will address issues of urgent concern to the LDCs: (i) commodities, with particular focus on agriculture; (ii) capacity building and new technologies; (iii) financing for development, debt relief and capital flows. Moreover, the issue of gender and development will be addressed in all of these areas as a cross-sectoral issue. The initiative aims at promoting parliamentary action on issues addressed by the Conference as well as parliamentary follow-up action focused on practical implementation of the commitments to be adopted at UN-LDC III. Organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the European Parliament, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the event is open to national delegations, NGOs and press representatives.

SOCIAL EVENTS


Monday, 14 May

13.00: The Swedish Presidency is hosting the Official Opening Lunch for Heads of Delegation in the European Parliament Building, Salons des Membres (through the Spinelli entrance, to the right).

17.30: All Heads of Delegation are cordially invited to the Royal Palace to attend the ceremony during which the International King Baudouin Prize for Development will be awarded in the presence of Their Majesties the King and Queen. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, will address the assembly. Transportation by special coaches will be provided from the European Parliament at 17.00, as well as back to the Parliament after the reception, at around 19.00.

18.00: The President of the European Parliament, Mr. Nicole Fontaine, is offering a reception for the participants in the High-level Parliamentary Round Table in front of meeting room 1A 02. It will be hosted by Mr. Joaquim Miranda, MEP, and Mr. John Corrie, MEP.

Tuesday, 15 May

19.00 - 21.00: On behalf of the Belgian Government, Mr. Eddy Boutmans, Secretary of State for International Cooperation, has the pleasure of inviting the participants in the LDC Conference to a reception to be held at the Autoworld Museum (at the Cinquantenaire). Special invitations have been issued. Transportation by coaches will be provided on a shuttle basis between the European Parliament and the Autoworld Museum. Parking facilities are also available at the Cinquantenaire.


Thursday, 17 May

18:30: Mr. Romano Prodi, on behalf of the European Commission, is offering a reception for all delegates in the European Parliament Building.

GENERAL INFORMATION



Registration and accreditation

Admission to the European Parliament Building requires showing the identity badge issued to delegates upon registration. Identity badges will be issued on the basis of advance communications submitted to the Conference secretariat.

Registration at the Spinelli entrance of the European Parliament Building will take place daily as of 11 May 2001, from 8.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., for delegations, IGOs, the UN and other agencies.

Registration for the press/media and NGOs will take place as of 10 May, from 8.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., in the building next to the European Parliament, Spinelli entrance (office 1F35).

To register and to obtain photo ID badges, all participants should go to the respective Registration and Accreditation Counters with their passport and credentials.

For purposes of formal accreditation and preparation of the official list of participants in the Conference, the credentials of representatives, alternates and advisers should be submitted in writing to the Secretary-General of the Conference and the original copy deposited with the Registration and Accreditation Counter.

General statements

General statements will be made in Room 4B01 of the European Parliament Building and be broadcast live on the Internet. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in the six official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).

For inclusion in the list of speakers, please contact Mr. Masahiro Igarashi (tel.: 0498/587 569; fax: 02/230 3794, Office 1C50I, 1st floor, above the Spaak entrance of the European Parliament Building). The name and title of the speaker should be provided at least one full day before the speech.

Advance copies of statements should be submitted to the conference room staff. Whenever possible, texts should also be submitted in electronic format (preferably plain text or Word documents) for uploading onto the Conference Web Site. Please send to patricia.almeida@unctad.org, or give a diskette to the conference room staff.

Distribution of documents

The documentation for the Conference will be distributed to delegations in a limited number of copies in the official languages of their choice at the Documents Distribution Counter (walkway, 3rd floor).

Car parks

A limited number of parking spaces will be reserved for delegations in the European Parliament Building parking grounds. Special parking stickers can be obtained from United Nations Security at the main Registration Counter.

Arrival and departure of Heads of State or Government and Heads of Delegation

Delegates are requested to inform the United Nations Protocol Office (Room II, walkway, 3rd floor, European Parliament Building, tel.: 02/230 8375; fax: 02/230 9985,) of the scheduled arrival and departure of Heads of State or Government and Heads of Delegation.

Social events

To help ensure that social events (i.e. cocktail parties and receptions) are not scheduled for the same time, delegations should contact the United Nations Protocol Office regarding their proposed dates.

NGO Forum

The NGO Forum will take place from 14 to 20 May at the Bibliothèque Solvay (close to the European Parliament Building) and other venues. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, will address the Forum on 14 May at 11.40 a.m. Delegates are welcome to attend Forum sessions.

The Journal

The Journal of the Conference, issued daily, will be available at the Documents Distribution Counter as well as on the Conference Web Site at the following address:

Exhibition

The Conference exhibition is located on the 3rd floor walkway, European Parliament Building. The exhibition focuses on the cultural heritage of the LDCs and on the work of the international organizations in these countries. Approximately 10 countries and 22 agencies and organizations are expected to participate.

UN Security Office

The UN Security Office is located on the 2nd floor, walkway, European Parliament Building (tel.: 02/280 4974).

Lost property

Inquiries should be made to European Parliament Security at the main Registration Counter.

First aid and health services

An on-site service will provide all first aid facilities at the European Parliament Building. Ambulance services will be on site, should transfer be required to the local hospital. All costs incurred at hospitals or for other medical care will be at each delegate's own expense.

Travel services

Offices of the tourist and air travel agencies located within the European Parliament Building will assist delegations in making arrangements for local and international travel, and also for tours in Belgium.

Banque Bruxelles Lambert (BBL) on the ground floor of the European Parliament Building. Banking hours: Sunday, 13 May, 11.00 to 18.00;
