Advisory Committee Meeting of the Fashion and Cosmetics Industry Biodiversity Platform

31 March 2011
Milan
, Italy

The work related to the creation of a platform to bring together relevant actors from the cosmetics and fashion industry to promote collaboration to further the knowledge and understanding of the linkages between these industries and biodiversity, began in late 2009. The year 2010 was dedicated to understanding more in depth each of the industries and laying out initial ideas of how could such a platform contribute significantly to tackling the loss of biodiversity.

In 2011, focused is now turned to establishing concrete work lines and activities that could be undertaken by the platform as a whole and defining a common strategy that could allow this collaboration to materialise.

The post-Nagoya agenda provides further elements to direct the efforts of the platform. This, added to other relevant processes and conventions such as CITES, the multilateral trade agenda and the preparations towards Rio+20 create the policy framework for the platform.

This new context defines more clearly the information and knowledge gaps still existing in the biodiversity arena and thus opens new opportunities for fostering effective partnerships in overcoming these gaps. The platform has an opportunity to be at the forefront of thinking and action in this area.

The Advisory Committee Meeting of the Fashion and Cosmetics Industry Biodiversity Platform met on March 31st 2011 at the Headquarters of Ermenegildo Zegna Group, in Milan, Italy.

The objectives of the meeting were the following:

  • Establishment of one Advisory Committee for the platform
  • Agreeing on how to proceed for finalisation the two sectoral documents
  • Setting the basis for a communication strategy of the platform
  • Agreeing on the scope of work
  • Establishment of initial activities
  • Agreement on next steps

The agenda of the meeting was structured in line with the main working lines being proposed: 1) Applied Research, 2) Value Chain Development, and 3) Communication, Education and Awareness Building. Two other specific issues were included in the agenda being the sectoral documents being developed and the advisory committee related issues.
