06 June 2016
03:15 - 04:30 hrs. Conference Room 11, UN Headquarters
New York
, United States of America

This event will discuss practical responses to the policy challenges of ensuring STI support the SDGs during the first multi-stakeholder forum on science, technology and innovation for the SDGs (STI forum).

Policy makers face multiple challenges for ensuring that science, technology and innovation (STI) contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Some of these include:

• Strengthening domestic innovation capabilities
• Building consensus on priority areas and resource allocation
• Identifying financial resources for sustainable investments
• Reworking institutional frameworks to enable the design and implementation of sound innovation policies
• Addressing inconsistent policy objectives, particularly in contexts of limited evidence and of weak policy-making capacities

This event will share practical experiences on how international organizations, donor agencies, and training institutions are collaborating to support countries in the strengthening of their STI policy-making capacities. Experts will showcase country cases from Africa, Latin America, and Western Asia with the aim to share practical responses and lessons learned.

The side event is being organized by UNCTAD in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
