UNCTAD is currently conducting a Sustainable Freight Transport (SFT) assessment for Fiji, as part of the United Nations Development Account (UNDA) project (Tranche 12) "Promoting a shift towards sustainable freight transport in the Asia-Pacific region" implemented by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The UNCTAD SFT assessment aims to conduct a rapid analysis of Fiji's freight transport sector, encompassing maritime and road transport. This assessment seeks to achieve the following objectives: 1) investigate the current situation and performance of Fiji’s freight transport sector; 2) identify challenges and opportunities for transitioning to sustainable freight transport systems; 3) promote SFT systems that are economically viable, environmentally friendly, and socially equitable/inclusive; and 4) optimize the role of SFT in value chain development and regional integration.

Based on UNCTAD's SFT assessment methodology, using a combination of online and in-person methods, the assessment has accumulated data, insights, and perspectives pertinent to Fiji’s freight transport sector, with the engagement of a broad spectrum of stakeholders from the government, private sector (both transport service providers and users), industry associations, international organizations, NGOs involved in the freight transport sector. Underpinned by qualitative and quantitative analyses of the sector’s present status, performance, and the opportunities and challenges for fostering more sustainable, efficient, and socially inclusive freight systems, the outcome of the assessment is a comprehensive report featuring policy recommendations and an action matrix.

The preliminary findings present the quantitative results of the SFT assessment, utilizing the UNCTAD SFT Index methodology that assesses the sustainability of Fiji’s freight transport in an internationally comparable manner, as well as the SFT survey drawing upon information and input received in response to the stakeholders’ survey questionnaires. Following consultation and validation, the final report of the SFT assessment for Fiji will be made available online.
