UNCTAD's Division on Technology and Logistics will bring the issue of gender-related ICT statistics to the 11th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS), which will take place in Mexico City, Mexico, from 4 to 6 December 2013.

The WTIS is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and hosted by the Government of Mexico. Ministries, regulatory agencies, telecommunication operating companies, and national statistical offices responsible for ICT statistics will participate in the WTIS. Some experts on information society measurements will also attend.

Prior to the WTIS, on Tuesday 3 December (14:00-18:00), UNCTAD will chair jointly with ITU an Expert Meeting on Gender and ICT Indicators, organized on behalf of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development, in the context of the work of its Task Group on Gender (TGG). The Task Group aims to improve the measurement of gender and ICT, including by developing additional gender-relevant indicators and methodologies.  The meeting will discuss a first report of the TGG, which includes a list of proposed indicators at the intersection of gender and ICT. The proposed indicators will be assessed from the point of view of their policy relevance and feasibility of statistical measurement.

On Thursday, 5 December (14.00-15.30), UNCTAD will co-organize and moderate a summary session "Measuring ICT and Gender", jointly with the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development. The session will present the report and summarize the Expert Meeting discussions to the wider public. Participants are invited to provide feedback to the Partnership on the proposed areas of measurement and related indicators. Special attention will be paid to a discussion on the measurement of ICT employment and mobile phone ownership.
