Providing fair, affordable and speedy dispute resolution and redress for consumers is the aim of modern consumer protection policies. The revised United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection contain a new section on dispute resolution and redress, which is also relevant for judges.
The National School of Judges and the National Institute for de Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) of the Dominican Republic invited UNCTAD to provide training to 40 judges involved in consumer protection.
UNCTAD presented the recent developments and best practices in consumer dispute resolution and redress, in particular its legal nature and avenues for providing consumers with fair, effective, transparent and impadtial mechanisms to address consumer complaints through administrative, judicial and alternative dispute resolution, including for cross-border cases.
Consumers International presented recent cases of judicial redress in Latin America, and introduced individual and collective actions, which were commented by a national judge.
