Workshop on the Promotion of FDI in the Solar Energy Sector in India

UNCTAD, in partnership with Invest India, organized a capacity building Workshop on the Promotion of FDI in Solar Energy Projects on 10 March, in New Delhi, India. The event hosted more than 50 senior staff members Invest India, national and state ministries, the India Renewable Energy Development Agency, the Solar Energy Society of India, other NGOs, and investment promotion officials from 7 Asian and African countries, including Bhutan, China, Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

During four workshop sessions, speakers from the Government of India, UNCTAD, Invest India, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency, Solar Energy Society of India, SBI Capital Markets Ltd., and British High Commission provided their insights on the green investment opportunity, the development of solar energy projects and the role of investment promotion agencies (IPAs) in attracting FDI in the solar energy sector.

UNCTAD also presented key recommendations of an advisory report Promoting FDI in Solar Energy Projects in India. Investment promoters from Kenya, Malaysia and Thailand shared their experiences in the development and promotion of solar energy projects in their countries. Participants also debated how an IPA can develop an action play to promote the solar energy sector for foreign investors.​
