The seventeenth session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), which convened in Geneva on 12–16 May 2014, concluded with two draft resolutions for the consideration by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The first resolution, on "Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) for Development", requested that the CSTD continue its role as a torch-bearer for STI and that it help articulate the important roles of STI, engineering and information and communications technology in the post-2015 development agenda.
The second resolution, on the "Assessment of the Progress Made in the Implementation of and Follow-up to the Outcome of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)", requested the CSTD to invite further inputs from member States, all facilitators and stakeholders and to organize, during its 18th session, a substantive discussion on the 10-year review of the progress made in the implementation of the WSIS outcomes, and to report thereon, through the ECOSOC, to the General Assembly, as it makes an overall review of the implementation of WSIS outcomes in 2015.
The commission, which was presided over by Chairman Andrew Reynolds, Senior Advisor on Space and Advanced Technologies for the United States Department of State, identified two priority themes for its eighteenth session in 2015; "Strategic foresight for the Post-2015 Development Agenda" and "Digital Development".
Finally, Ms. Omobola Johnson, Minister of Communication Technology and the Supervising Minister of Science and Technology of Nigeria, was elected as Chair of the Bureau of the eighteenth session of the CSTD.
