Peer review held for upcoming LDC report 2012

"Harnessing Remittances and Diaspora Knowledge for Productive Capacities in the Least Developed Countries" is the working title and theme of this year's LDC Report currently under preparation by UNCTAD. ​

A peer review was conducted 4 - 5 July with experts from academia and other international organizations, as well as with the various divisions of UNCTAD itself.​

The peer review was organized into five main sessions, focussed on:
  • Recent dynamics in migration and remittances in LDCs
  • Brain drain, diaspora knowldege and the LDCs: trends, concepts and case studies
  • Knowledge without borders: networking with diaspora for knowledge accumulation, and diversification of productive capacities in LDCs
  • Harnessing remittances and diaspora knowledge for productive capacities: selected policy proposals
  • Main messages of the report -- the way forward.
The review benefitted from the inputs, comments, suggestions, and information provided by the following discussants:
  • Mr. Tauhid Pasha, Senior Specialist, Labour Migration and Development Division, International Organization for Migration (IOM)
  • Professor Jeronimo Cortina, Professor, University of Houston, USA
  • Dr. Jerome Elie, Executive Director of the Programme for the Study of Global Migration, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva
  • Mr. Frank Laczko, Head of Reserach and Publications, Migration Research Division, IOM

Mr. Taffere Tesfachew, Director of UNCTAD's Africa and Least Developed Countries Division, moderated the sessions.

The feedback from the external experts and academics as well as comments from other Divisions within UNCTAD will be used to further finalizing the draft report.
 
UNCTAD's LDCs Report 2012 is scheduled to be launched in November this year.

Peer reviews of Reports and other major publications are routinely conducted by UNCTAD with the cooperation of academia, other international organizations and stakeholders.
