UNCTAD/ENCATC Expert Forum on Creative Economy

08 April 2016

UNCTAD and the European network on cultural management and policy (ENCATC) jointly organized an Expert Forum on the Creative Economy in Brussels on 6 April 2016. Participants discussed possible topics for the UNCTAD Creative Economy Report, to be published later this year.

During the past decade, the creative economy has become a topical issue on the international economic and development agenda. Even in times of financial crisis, the creative economy has remained resilient. It is a dynamic emerging sector in world trade and is at the forefront of global sustainable development - with creativity, knowledge and access to information being increasingly recognized as engines for growth.

Participants at the Forum included representatives from UNCTAD, UNESCO, the European Commission and ENCATC, encompassing the creative sector from 10 European countries.

The following were some of the questions analysed and debated by the participants, with the objective to feed into the 2016 UNCTAD Creative Economy Report.

  • Where will the Creative Economy be in five-years-time?

  • What are the challenges ahead?

  • How to make a living from artistic work?

  • What will be the key priorities for the Creative Sector in five-years-time?

The UNCTAD Creative Economy Reports link the economy and culture -- embracing economic, cultural, technological and social aspects of development at both the macro and micro levels.
