Secretary-General (1964 - 1969)
Raúl Prebisch was born on April 17, 1901 in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. He studied Economics at the University of Buenos Aires from 1918 to 1922 and worked as professor of Economic Policy at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, National University of Buenos Aires from 1923 to 1948.
During this period, he also held several positions in the Argentine public sector, namely Deputy Director of the Argentine Department of Statistics (1925-1927), Director of Economic Research for the National Bank of Argentina (1927-1930), Under-Secretary of Finance (1930-1932) and first Director-General of the Argentine Central Bank (1935-1948).
Dr. Prebisch joined the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) where he was the Executive Secretary from 1950 to 1963. He was Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) from 1964 to 1969.
He is known primarily for his work in international and development economics as well as his immense contributions to the United Nation's effort to achieve a fairer international economic order.
He authored many books, two of which are Towards a Dynamic Development Policy for Latin America and El Manifesto.
He died in Santiago, Chile, in April 1986.
