Government officials and academics from 20 countries in the Africa region will be trained by UNCTAD in the use of multidisciplinary approaches to trade and development issues at a 22 October-9 November course in Dakar, Senegal.
"Key Issues on the International Economic Agenda" has been jointly organized by UNCTAD, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the Senegalese Ministry of Trade, Consumer Affairs and Handicrafts. The Ministry is hosting the event with government support.
Participants will study the links between trade, investment, and development. They will discuss strategies for making these links effective. And the trade and development policies of African countries will be evaluated.
The course syllabus has been designed to draw on UNCTAD´s expertise in trade and development, financial flows and macroeconomic management, productive capacities, structural adjustment, investment and technology, trade facilitation, and e-commerce and development. The 24 participants will learn about UNCTAD´s analytical and research work. They also will hear presentations from UNECA and from Senegalese institutions, namely the Centre d´Etudes de Politiques pour le Développement (CEPOD); the Senegal Investment Agency (APIX) and the Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services.
The course is part of a series that began following UNCTAD X in February 2000, when the organization was requested to strengthen the understanding of decision makers from developing countries on key development issues within UNCTAD´s fields of competence. This month´s Dakar course is the third given for the African region.
