AN EU-FUNDED UNCTAD PROJECT TO STRENGTHEN ANGOLAN TRADE-RELATED CAPACITIES IS LAUNCHED IN LUANDA

Geneva, Switzerland, 31 October 2007

Today the UNCTAD/TrainForTrade project for Angola will be officially launched in Luanda. This project aims at assisting the Angolan Government in the implementation of a national training and capacity building framework in the field of international trade. The project is funded by the European Commission for a total of 2.940.000 Euro and has duration of four years.

A National Steering Committee (NSC) will oversee and validate the overall direction and policy of the project. The NSC will be headed by the Ministry of Commerce and composed by the main national stakeholders (Ministry of Planning, the Ministry of Finance, Universities, etc). The Committee will also promote inter-ministerial coordination mechanisms for mainstreaming trade policies in the relevant Ministries.

The TrainForTrade programme implements training and capacity-building activities to assist developing countries develop a sustainable local capacity to deal with trade, investment and development issues. In the last twelve months, its capacity-building activities benefited 570 officials worldwide, of which 325 were from least developed countries.
