EVALUATIONS OF UNCTAD PROGRAMMES NOW AVAILABLE AT WEBSITE

Geneva, Switzerland, 28 February 2008

A new website -- http://www.unctad.org/evaluation -- provides access to evaluation reports on UNCTAD programmes and describes the ways in which the evaluations are conducted.

The site also will serve as a resource guide for those who need to conduct or organize evaluations, making broadly available the relevant policies and guidelines.

The website is a response to calls for a stronger emphasis on evaluation of programmes and activities throughout the United Nations system. Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said such reviews enable better decision-making by allowing clear comparisons of the performance of programmes and the resources allocated to fund them. Mr. Annan called for more transparency and availability of relevant information to allow member States to "hold managers accountable for specific results, and assure them that their financial contributions are being used in an efficient manner".

The UNCTAD website aims at better public accountability and is also intended to serve as a repository of lessons learned in carrying out evaluations. It should enable the secretariat and member States to reflect systematically on the organization´s activities and to increase the effectiveness of programmes by altering their content and, if necessary, revising their objectives.
