LIMA HOSTS TRAINING COURSE ON ECONOMIC ISSUES

Geneva, Switzerland, 18 June 2007

Government officials and academics from 22 countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region will be trained by UNCTAD from 18 June - 6 July in the use of multidisciplinary approaches to trade and development issues.

Titled "Key Issues on the International Economic Agenda", the training session will take place in Lima, Peru, and is being organized jointly by UNCTAD, the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNECLAC), the Facultad Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) and the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is hosting the event.

The course will focus on the relationships between trade, investment and development progress; and will review the strategies and experiences of countries in the region. UNCTAD will provide expertise on trade and development policies, financial flows, macroeconomic management, investment, technology, and e-commerce. Participants also will learn about the analytical and research work of UNCTAD, UNECLAC, FLACSO, ProInversion (the Peruvian State agency for investment promotion), and other national experts from Peru.

The course is part of a series mandated by the Bangkok Plan of Action adopted at the UNCTAD X quadrennial conference in 2000 and reaffirmed at UNCTAD XI in 2004. This month´s course in Lima is the third for the Latin American and Caribbean region.
