New Director appointed for UNCTAD´s divisionon International Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities

Geneva, Switzerland, 21 July 2011

Geneva 21 July 2011 - Guillermo Valles, a Uruguayan diplomat, assumed on Wednesday the position of Director of UNCTAD´s Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities, UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi announced today. Mr. Valles has extensive knowledge and experience in trade policy issues and the work of UNCTAD, developed during 35 years of diplomatic service for the Government of Uruguay.

The Division, known as DITC, focuses on promoting the development of developing countries through international trade. It provides support for their participation in international trade negotiations; helps them in their efforts to strengthen their service-sector capacities; and promotes the integration of trade, environment, and development. It also analyzes issues related to competition law, policy, and development; and seeks to enhance the contribution of the commodity sector to development through diversification and risk management.
