UNCTAD hosts 2nd training workshop for technical tutors at ports

Geneva, Switzerland, 10 June 2010

8-11 June meeting takes place in Dar es Salaam

Geneva, 10 June 2010 - Fourteen senior managers from the ports of Ghana, Indonesia, the Maldives, and Tanzania are participating in UNCTAD´s second Training of Technical Tutors Workshop for English-speaking port communities. The workshop is being held in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, through 11 June.

The workshop was organized by the UNCTAD TrainForTrade(1) programme with the support of Irish Aid and the Dublin Port Company, and in cooperation with the Tanzania Ports Authority. Anne Barrington, Ambassador of Ireland to Tanzania, and other ambassadors will present certificates to the participants during a closing ceremony at the Protea Courtyard Hotel on Friday.

The objective of the workshop is to support local trainers in managing the overall process of UNCTAD´s "Modern Port Management" course, including the organization and use of the course´s online elements. These online elements include concepts on distance learning and exchanges through UNCTAD´s TrainForTrade e-learning platform; the presentation of distance-learning sessions; the management of chat and forum tools; and the evaluation of online courses.

Port communities of developing countries can spur economic development by providing efficient and competitive port services that boost local and regional trade. The increasingly sophisticated nature of global port operations makes training essential. UNCTAD helps port communities in developing countries strengthen their employees´ skills by taking advantage of local resources and conditions to keep up with international competition and new commercial practices.

The Human Resources Development Section of UNCTAD´s Division on Technology and Logistics, with the assistance of UNCTAD´s Transport Section and Trade Logistics Branch, has been implementing the TrainForTrade "Port Training Programme" since 1996. To date, the programme has benefited over 1,000 port operators from 17 developing countries.
