UNCTAD, SPAIN TO SIGN 300,000 EURO AGREEMENT ON TECHNICAL COOPERATION IN LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES

Geneva, Switzerland, 13 September 2006

UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi and the Secretary of State for Tourism and Trade of Spain, Pedro Mejía Gómez, will sign a technical cooperation agreement today that provides the 2006 voluntary contribution of Spain to UNCTAD technical cooperation -- an amount of 300,000 Euros, duplicating last year´s contribution.

The money will be allocated to technical cooperation programmes for Spanish-speaking Latin American countries on such matters as international investment agreements; negotiations on trade facilitation; negotiations on trade in services; and training courses organized by Trainfortrade in cooperation with the Latin-American Integration Association (ALADI).

The Ambassador of Spain to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Juan Antonio March, and Latin American ambassadors and delegates will attend the 8:45 a.m. signing and will then exchange views on UNCTAD technical cooperation programmes in Latin American countries.
