UNCTAD to train negotiators of international investment agreements from countries of the Latin American economic system

Geneva, Switzerland, 29 January 2010

Geneva, 29 January 2010 - Participants from 15 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean will be attending a course for negotiators of international investment agreements organized by UNCTAD from 2-5 February in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The course was organized in cooperation with the secretariat of the Latin American Economic System (SELA) and with the support of the Spanish Government.

The course concludes a programme started in October 2009, comprising a distance-learning phase and a classroom phase. The success of the programme stems from the use of these two learning methods, which combine multimedia tools and face-to-face teaching.

The distance-learning part of the programme was followed by 48 negotiators of investment agreements from 18 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. On the basis of their results and employment history, 26 of these negotiators were selected to complete the training programme in Santo Domingo.

The idea is that course participants will be able to study in greater depth the concepts learned during the distance-learning programme, and to review and apply them. Course materials were made available to them through the TrainForTrade learning platform (http://learn.unctad.org).

Events like this enable government officials from the Latin America and Caribbean countries concerned to improve their skills and contribute to their countries´ development.
