UNCTAD trains West African officials in procedures for funding international trade

Geneva, Switzerland, 30 April 2010

Geneva, 30 April 2010 - In an environment of increased market competition, exporters must master the variety of financing tools in order to adapt to their customers´ needs and the laws of the country. This is the area of UNCTAD´s technical assistance activities and training on international trade financing procedures that ends today in Ouagadougou.

Senior officials from Mauritania and the Francophone and Portuguese-speaking countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) attended the five-day program organized in collaboration with ECOWAS and with financial support from the French Government.

Representatives from ten West African countries benefited from this training: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d´Ivoire, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.

This UNCTAD TrainForTrade training program addresses all issues related to the "financing procedures of international trade". It will help ECOWAS developing countries strengthen their capacities in terms of export financing and thus improve their participation in international trade.

Launched in 1998, TrainForTrade contributes to improving human resources and institutional support at national and regional levels in the areas of trade and investment, as key factors for growth for developing countries, particularly least developed countries (LDCs). TrainForTrade collaborates with UNCTAD research and analysis teams to develop, adapt and update teaching materials. The teaching skills of the TrainForTrade team together with UNCTAD´s expertise are the foundation of instructional design and delivery of courses.
