3rd meeting of the UNCTAD/ FAO/ IFOAM International Task Force on Harmonisation and Equivalence in Organic Agriculture

Rome, Italy.
17-19 November 2004

Executive Summary

The main focus of this meeting revolved around two main discussion papers: an overall long-term strategy and a short-term action plan describing practical activities to be initiated by the ITF immediately, so as to improve the situation for organic trade.

The ITF did not endorse the idea of establishing a new international oversight body as proposed in the long term strategy paper. Instead, the existing systems should be improved towards facilitating the trade of organic products. Based on the proposals in the strategy papers, the ITF agreed to pursue the idea of a) a standards/conformity assessment requirements database, b) a consumer study, c) a study on equivalency models, d) a study on experiences with cooperations between governments and private bodies (e.g. accreditation bodies), e) guidelines for collaboration between conformity assessment bodies and f) an analysis of conformity assessment requirements and their relevance to organic certification.
