See Discussion Papers for the 2nd Regional Workshop for this project, held in Havana, Cuba, from 30 May - 2 June 2000

Donors: United Kingdom (Department for International Development - DFID)
Implemented by: UNCTAD with the collaboration of the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD)
Beneficiary Countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cuba, India, Philippines, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda
Status: ongoing

Objectives:
To assist the beneficiary countries to a) deepen their understanding of the complex linkages between trade and environment; b) improve policy coordination at the national level; and c) participate effectively in multilateral deliberations on trade and environment in the WTO, UNCTAD and other fora.

Description:
The ten beneficiary countries nominate two experts each -- one from the Ministry of Trade and one from the Ministry of Environment. Two roundtables and three workshops bring together the same core participants. A small number of other workshop participants will be drawn from research institutions and NGOs, particularly from the host country and other countries in the same region.

Activities:
At the first roundtable held in Geneva 24-25 June 1999, Geneva-based representatives from the ten countries joined the core participants. A menu of possible topics outlined in an issues paper prepared by the UNCTAD secretariat and FIELD was discussed. This led to definition of the project's future focus, specifically the topics of the three workshops to be held in developing countries and of supporting documentation needed, including presentation papers, background papers and sector studies. Most of these papers would be prepared by developing country research institutions in collaboration with their governments and other members of the national trade and/or environment communities. Each workshop will successively deepen the understanding of the chosen issues.

The first regional workshop was held in Los Baños, Philippines on 11-13 November 1999

The second regional workshop was held in Havana, Cuba on 30 May - 2 June 2000

The second roundtable will be held in London on 2-3 November 2000.
