International Women's Day 2022

Statement by Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD

International Women's Day 2022

08 March 2022

Today, the world marks International Women’s Day. And the current context of crisis makes this day even more important.

COVID-19 has been a cruel reminder that women are the ones most affected when economic, social and political shocks happen.

While most of humanity faces a lost decade of progress due to this crisis, the threat for women is now estimated at four decades.

At UNCTAD, we believe trade has the potential to close the widening gender gaps that increase the vulnerability of women.

But gender equality must be at the centre of trade policymaking.

As UNCTAD’s secretary-general, I commit to putting women’s empowerment at the heart of our work.

Although the challenges ahead are daunting, we can – and must – shape a better future for all women, everywhere.

Because only then will we achieve prosperity for all.
