The knowns and the unknowns: Economic, social, and environmental impacts of NTMs

15:00 - 16:30 hrs. Central European Time (CET)
Online

Non-tariff measures (NTMs) are policy measures other than tariffs that can potentially have an economic effect on international trade in goods. They are increasingly shaping trade, influencing who trades what and how much. For exporters, importers and policymakers, NTMs represent a major challenge. Though many NTMs aim primarily at protecting public health or the environment, they also substantially affect trade through information, compliance and procedural costs.

Understanding the uses and implications of NTMs is essential for the formulation of effective development strategies to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. UNCTAD and their partners have been working on various research on the impacts of NTMs on trade flows, on the environment, and on our daily lives. This webinar is dedicated to cover the status-quo of our research, to highlight what we have discovered, and to explore what we have yet to uncovered on the topic. This also serves as a kick-off to an online course on Economic Analysis of NTMs - which will take place on 04 October – 19 November 2021. Interested participants could apply here.
