Key maritime trade routes are experiencing significant challenges due to geopolitical tensions and the increasing impacts of climate change, affecting global supply chains and critical trade flows.
According to UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), these disruptions are having profound implications on global trade, particularly through key maritime chokepoints such as the Panama Canal.
The visit to the canal by Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan aims to spotlight the impact of climate change on global trade and the challenges it poses for developing countries.
The Secretary-General’s visit precedes the first-ever Global Supply Chain Forum, organized by UN Trade and Development and the Government of Barbados from 21 to 24 May 2024 in Bridgetown.
Ms. Grynspan will participate in the Forum, together with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed and the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley.
