In Resolution 70/186 of 22 December 2015 the General Assembly revised the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection and entrusted UNCTAD with the mandate to serve as focal point within the United Nations on this issue. For the first time, the Guidelines contain a set of recommendations to businesses, so as to improve their practices in relation to consumers and strengthen consumer protection regimes with the participation of Governments, businesses and consumer groups.
The IPS Consumo think tank will host a Seminar on Good Practices on Business Engagement in Consumer Protection, gathering public and private sector speakers to identify in which ways businesses can contribute to improving consumer welfare in the light of the revised United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection.
H.E. Mr. Torquato Lorena Jardim, Minister of Justice of Brazil and Ms. Teresa Moreira, Head of Competition and Consumer Protection at UNCTAD will open the event.
Major businesses in Latin American, such as Itaú Banco, Gol, Airbnb, will showcase their experiences. UNCTAD and Universities of Brazil, Colombia and Peru will highlight best practices.
