UNCTAD discusses Bioenergy Finance at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) Conference

19 - 20 October 2015
Berlin
, Germany

The conference  "Bioenergy and Development: the Investment Case for Sustainable Production Systems", took place in Berlin on 19 and 20 October 2015.

UNCTAD gathered with a number of organizations working on the responsible development of bioenergy policy to discuss possible investment channels in bioenergy and corresponding governance interventions to sustainably meet growing energy needs while contributing to achieving the targets of the post-2015 development agenda.

The conference marked a ressurgence in the bioenergy debate - now much energized by recent developments in 2nd generation biofuels and biomaterial industries.

Topics discussed included  food security, poverty elimination and sustainable environmental management. In particular, by analysing relevant experiences and providing scientific evidence on sustainable bioenergy production, the conference contributed  to global debates on the development of multilateral environmental agreements (including COP21), as well as on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 7: “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all”.

This high-level conference was organized by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF).  It was supported by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), GIZ and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). ditc-ted-20102015-berlin-moresi-fritsche450.jpgMs. Michaela Morese (GBEP/FAO) and Mr. Uwe Fritsche (IINAS) © IASS/Bettina Ausserhofer
