UNCTAD Public Symposium: The global economic crisis and development - the way forward

UNCTAD Public Symposium UNCTAD´s first public symposium is intended to give a voice to the voiceless — to draw out the opinions and perspectives of people and organizations yet to be heard from in the debate on the current global financial turmoil and its effects.

Participants will come from civil society, academia, the private sector and the media, as well as from governments and Parliaments.

The intent is to deepen understanding of the crisis. During the debate, UNCTAD will share its expertise in research and analysis on trade, investment, and the current state of the global economy.

Aim / Objective:

  • Bring into focus a number of current challenges on the world´s and UNCTAD´s development agenda and to deepen the understanding on these issues.

  • Enrich UNCTAD´s debates through the participation of Civil Society Organizations, academia, parliamentarians, the private sector and member States in order to contribute to achieving the Accra objectives.

  • Strengthen the contribution of civil society, and other development actors from developed and developing countries.

Outcomes:

  • A compendium will be issued summarizing the discussions and including written contributions and background documents. Hardcopy and electronic versions of the compendium will be distributed to all participants and to appropriate information networks.

  • A report of the symposium will be made available to other relevant international debates and fora.

  • Information on the event and its outcomes will be broadcast through UNCTAD´s publicity and outreach channels.

Target Audience:

Participation will be open to representatives of civil society organizations, private sector entities, parliamentarians, academia, officials from interested United Nations agencies, member States, International Organizations and the media.
